Unsolved Mysteries
I grew up in very large house, with dark wood floors, jewel toned upholstery, and grandfather clocks. I will never forget the sound the hanging bells made as I ran through the foyer, across an Oriental rug, to the bottom of the staircase; regardless of my efforts to quiet my steps, the clock always chimed a daunting hello and its woodwork, capped with two ornate horns of wood, produced the...

Isn't elegance forgetting what one's wearing?
I have recently become acquainted with the amazing Mike Anderson. (<—— CLICK THIS LINK I’M SERIOUS!)
Below is a video shoot I wardrobe and makeup styled yesterday, (with the wonderful Ryan Dickie as DP!).
I’ll post the finished product soon, but that is all I am going to say for now. Otherwise, where is the suspense?
So far, I am loving 2010!

All encompassing loss, including my words. . .
Backspace is the only key which I seem to successfully employ this morning. I will write about the fire, I will write about the damage and devastation, I will I do promise, I just will not do it today… .

The Christopher Pike Book Club
At my childhood beach house, on a shelf below flip flops encrusted with sand, the entire series of Sweet Valley High novels stood carefully catalogued between two pelican book ends. Even more so than our reprimand for forgoing doormats, tracking sand and shells across newly polished floors, my sister and I were routinely scolded for our choice in fiction. These teenage dramas, frivolous...

luke baker
I first met Luke Baker when I was working for David LaChapelle and at the time, living in his West Hollywood home. As a single girl occupying a three bedroom house, I was subject to entertain the occasional random guest of the studio. Without failure, each visitor posed as an opportunity for a new friendship and at the very least, an interesting number of days to follow.
To this day, Luke...

It is presumptuous for me to flatter myself so greatly as to refer to Nicholas as my other half.
He is, however, my consummate soul mate, my dearest friend, and my greatest support.
Sequined saddle shoes are the new Ruby Slippers, from the boy who sits in his sixth floor LES walk up weaving collars from mops to The Wizard of Oz and gluing plastic hats to the soundtrack of Sister Act. His work...

I went sledding today in Central Park, did you?
I felt like a like a kid, as little as I was when I wrote the poem below:
I wish for a blanket to cover my toes
A fluffy white one is what I chose.
When I woke in the morning, to my surprise,
A blanket of snow,
A compromise!

Match your shoes to your bag to your baguette.
Crafted from carbs and the loaves they loathe. Leave it to Nicholas Mendise to dress these society women with garments which, though never passing their lips, alternately have found themselves atop their haughty heads. Sourdough, tuscan, and pumpernickel à la Amy’s Bread, these loaves channel the famine of the great depression and, like peasants once standing in line awaiting rations...

MYTHED CONNECTION ART SHOW
Last night I unrolled my prints from the home they have become far too acquainted with, slipping them carefully out of a cardboard tube which, although dusty on the outside, was immaculately pristine beneath the several corrugated layers. With my hands encased in white cotton gallery gloves, I tacked my work to the walls of a Brooklyn basement where I felt both honored to present and genuinely...

Soft.Spot
Today, the arrival of two huge boxes of Soft Spot t-shirts, to the excitement of some but much to my dismay, marks the subsequent and impending departure of my two best friends on their tour of the eastern US.
Who will I drink coffee with in the mornings from our giant French press? The question remains unanswered, the only absolute being it will certainly not be my roommates Sarah and Bryan,...
One day when we are grown-ups
First:
Go to Soft Spot on Myspace and listen to the song Half a House!
The two faces above, though one smiles at the camera while the other cheats a slumber, are the very same faces that once stood side by side and mused of adulthood in a bathroom mirror. I applied her lipstick and braided her hair and she sang along to Jewel’s Pieces of Me with a sound far surpassing an...

Nova Landaeus returns integrity to the lost art of modeling, discreetly slipping it back into place as if it were never absent to begin with.
She filled this eighth floor loft in Astoria with a presence that rivaled the afternoon sun, lighting up the room and creating an ambience so luminous, it would be shameful not to document its beauty.
I found myself infected by her energy, as well as that...

My new friend January
On New Years day, I awoke in my bed in my baby blue Rodarte dress, carefully chosen to ring in the new year and now longing for its previous and more stable home on a lonely wooden hanger. After noticing the absence of one five hundred dollar shoe, I felt immediate panic followed by a tickled association between myself and Cinderella. This self appreciation, however, I dismissed rather quickly...

This year, I spent a long time reflecting on Christmas holidays of my childhood. It seems as though in the past, the celebration was more all-encompassing. I sat in my living room and gazed at a beautifully decorated evergreen tree and realized, at four years old, our freshly cut fir was relatively five times my height. The glass of eggnog poured by my mother filled a mug so large, I could...

One day when it is the future
With the help of Hanna Barbera and Aldous Huxley, creators of The Jetsons and A Brave New World, respectively, ideals of the future are manufactured and instilled in our minds and loom in impending doom, as always, just around the corner. Permanently affixed as mere premonitions, these concepts are too enveloped in their placement as “the future” to be recognized by society as they...

Cut from the same cloth
Sharing separate articles of a two-piece ensemble, I pose with a best friend on the eve of her departure for an engagement and new life with fiance in Argentina. She wears her favorite platforms, I wear her patchwork Pradas, and we celebrate a momentous, if temporary, visit among friends. With increasing progression, I watch as my closest disperse across the globe. It seems the farther they go...
Ready?
My friend Phil exhibited his artwork tonight at the Andrew Edlin Gallery, and never before have I been so happy to arrive at such a crowded venue. As a result of an alarmingly enormous turnout, the gallery was packed shoulder-to-shoulder with a line out the door and a body heat induced temperature fogging the icy windows.
It was the coldest day yet in New York City, and as no shock to any that...
purr on, little pussycat
Last night I satiated all twenty of my sweet-teeth at a candy cane cocktail party.
I encountered a kitten who tenderly purred and nuzzled against my legs, and while sipping on a drink with a peppermint twist, found myself contemplating this cat’s behavior when matched with an unyielding gaze toward my candy.
A random act of genuine kindness hangs in a museum of urban myths; sometimes...

Good fortune.
Today the make believe continued, and my father and I proceeded to entertain ourselves in the manner of children in a maze of museums. Full of imagination, we attended the Science Center and Museum of Natural History. Among many awe inspiring attractions, after seeing the fossilized remnants of dinosaurs I discovered that some fantasies are in fact more likely realities.
As if an afternoon...

Take two bolts and call me in the morning.
Recently, a friend introduced me to the term “diet dating”. Although an interesting idea well deserving of consideration, I must say I plan to avoid such social habits with the same unwavering adamancy as I deny both south beach and the infamous lemonade cleanse.
Diet dating, or rather, “a lighter version of a previous relationship between a couple that once was”, treads...
Suspend your disbelief!
The real world is preconceived but not predestined, and therefore predetermined only in intention.
Perhaps we had it right playing dress up and make believe, credible in our confidence that the universe will accommodate the span of our imaginations.
We fantasize about the houses we wish to build, carefully arranging rooms in tudor dollhouses and pausing to refuel with imaginary tea.
Upon...

A Streetcar Named Desire and a bus named B38
So beautiful in her demise that I wanted to collapse on stage, right there with her. Every seat in the full-house became vacant as an entire theater of spectators were coerced into the show. We left our bodies in our seats; vehicles for souls that could no longer rest as casual observers of a theatrical matinee. When Blanche Dubois (Blanchett) cried, I wiped the salty tears from my cheeks and...

RAD HOURANI 4 VOGUE RUSSIA
Little girls are predisposed to fantasize about their futures.
Prince charming and a knight in shining armor and ultimately, trailing off into the sunset to live happily ever after.
With a divorce rate that has long since lapped the success of marriage, we now know better. The modern woman doesn’t dream of the perfect man— she wants the perfect career, and this little girl dreamed of...
busy as ever!!!
I’ve been ticking this keyboard like a pianist to his ivory, working until unspoken hours and finally, slipping into bed to rise early with ideas that cannot wait a moment, even for breakfast.
I’m spending the rest of the afternoon at a vintage archive and tomorrow on a fashion editorial shoot for Vogue Russia. I’m finding inspiration everywhere I turn, writing constantly, and musing about more...

Dreams really do come true:
Achieved in unison what alone would not have been feasible or even conceivable, the following pictures represent the triumph of the artistic community of Savannah, Georgia, and the Savannah College of Art and Design.
Through his project which integrated the efforts of the entire community, Nick Cave sought to cater his craft to the local environment and produce an outcome which served to benefit...

"I want people to wake up in the morning and...
Tonight I witnessed a transformation of identities so profound that no amount of preparation could have groomed me for this experience.
To begin the evening, I observed as Nick gathered the dancers together for a group discussion regarding the sound suits. He explained their ability to transform the identity of the wearer from the very moment it embraces the skin, and added that, although equally...

Can you keep a secret?
I feel as though I am waiting for a Christmas that keeps getting postponed. Although in actuality, the sound suits were never intended to be opened before Thursday, like a child mesmerized by packages in front of the tree, I am desperate to open the large boxes and over eager to inspect what lies inside.
Carefully packaged and shipped from Chicago, the sound suits are not just detained in these...

Also starring:
Even his suggestion of composition and sudden inclination to pile a chair on his back rally for the claim that Nick Cave cannot escape abstract, three dimensional, and artistic elements from their permanent residence in his conscience.
Clearly, the form of the body can be made as much a part of sculpture as the inanimate objects it befriends. And who ever said sculptures must be statuesque? ...

Introducing: N I C K C A V E
I left my house at dawn and spent the day in transit. Two trains and two planes and I was delivered safely from New York to my old home of Savannah, Georgia, to attend the deFINE ART Festival at the Savannah College of Art and Design. Specifically, commissioned by my former school to photograph the artist Nick Cave and the preparation, as well as final presentation, of his “spoken-word,...
Nicholas Mendise
Nicholas Mendise took me by surprise. I fell fast and hard for friendship with this consistently charming, unapologetically talented and refreshingly unusual character.
He makes me laugh until I fall out of my chair, and then I laugh a little on the floor.
He can go a whole week without sleeping if it means completing a project he is passionate about.
Nicholas takes beautiful pictures with...

Escape from the City
When given the offer to trade the city for a weekend spent in a cabin on a lake, I gave my answer with a packed bag from the back seat of an SUV.
Although primarily a venture to create imagery for Sarah and Bryan’s album cover, this voyage highly surpassed its function as an artistic project and somehow became, down to the details, the perfect fall getaway. We arrived at Lake Quassapaug in...
Pumpkin Carving
I cannot think of a better way to celebrate the middle of October than to partake in perhaps one of my most favorite traditions.
Mulled apple cider, Misfits, home-made pumpkin whoopie pies, bliss.

Sarah Kinlaw
My greatest dreams, wishes, aspirations, and admirations are sent to Sarah Kinlaw, who is on her way to the top.
Below is the biography I wrote for Sarah to be included on her soon-to-be-released EP. (along with Bryan Keller of Brigham!)
“Her biography is a ballad at the verge of its crescendo. Notes of a songstress fueled by tiny fingers and a heart in her lungs. To see Sarah perform is...
